The University of Texas at Austin, like other public universities in Texas, is subject to the so-called "Top 10% Law". This law guarantees students who graduate in the top 10% of their high school class in Texas automatic admission to state-funded universities. Because of its popularity, there's a carveout for UT Austin that mandates that it fill 75% of its class under this law. This means the university caps automatic admission at a more stringent percentage. In recent years, the university offered automatic admission to students who graduated in the top 6% of their class. This changes to the top 5% beginning with the fall of 2026. Meeting the automatic admission class rank grants admission to the university but not to specific colleges and programs.

Other students are admitted through holistic admissions.

Acceptance rates at schools can vary depending on if the student is in-state, out-of-state, or international.
